Data from literature so far cover only parasitic infections, as specific infections, or contagious diseases in ostriches. However, since there is a potential danger of the transfer of agents from the environment, through rodents, birds or man, special attention is devoted to the study and monitoring of other diseases in these birds. Potential causes of diseases registered in ostriches and which are transferred to humans are the following: Newcastle Disease, influenza, Congo-Crimean haemorrhagic fever tuberculosis, salmonellosis, and campilobacteriosis. Great caution was taken following the reporting of a suspected case of spongious encephalopathy in an ostrich in a zoo in Germany. Attempts are under way to discover the cause of the poor vitality of ostrich chicks, and ostriches are no longer bred in places where this disease occurs. Megabacteria is the new unknown cause of the glandular and muscular stomach, which has been detected in these largest avians. The work is aimed at acquaint...ing veterinarians and veterinary inspectors with the veterinary-medical and technological problems of farm maintenance of ostriches on the grounds of the personal experiences of the authors, by presenting the work of experts in that area, as well as data from literature. At the last World Congress held in Vienna, Ratite Group 13 was formed with the World's Poultry Science Association, whose first meeting will be held in Madrid in 2005. Intensive production, in which technological, health, and other problems are present, cannot be developed in Europe without the help of research teams.
